Certina is a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1888 by the Kurth brothers, Adolf and Alfred, in the Swiss city of Grenchen. Initially, they started by producing movements and parts for the watch industry under the name "Grana", short for "Granacus", the Latin name for Grenchen.

In 1938, the Kurth brothers decided to rename the company "Certina", a Latin word derived from "certus", which means "sure" or "certain". The name reflected the brand's commitment to reliability and precision.

Introduced in 1959, Certina's DS (Double Security) range marked a significant milestone in the brand's commitment to creating highly robust and reliable timepieces. The DS concept was developed to provide enhanced protection for the watch movement, ensuring improved shock resistance, water resistance, and overall durability.
